What the UAE rules say about used car loans: how much you can borrow, the minimum down payment, the longest term, documents, and selling a financed car.
A used car loan in the UAE can cover up to 80% of the car's value, so you need a deposit of at least 20%. Repayment can run for up to 60 months, and your total monthly debt repayments, including the car loan, should not exceed half of your gross monthly income (the Central Bank's 50% debt burden ratio). The 80% and 60-month limits are listed on the government's u.ae portal. Individual banks then add their own limits on car age and income.
The rules below come from the u.ae portal, which summarises the Central Bank's consumer lending regulation, and from one bank's published product page used as a worked example. Where a number could not be confirmed on an official or bank page, this guide says so instead of guessing.
The u.ae portal states that car loans are treated separately from personal loans and should not exceed 80 per cent of the value of the financed vehicle. Put the other way, you fund at least 20% of the car's value yourself as a deposit.
A worked example, for illustration only and not a quote: on a car valued at AED 150,000, the most a lender could finance under the 80% limit is AED 120,000, leaving a minimum deposit of AED 30,000. The value is the lender's assessment of the car, which for a used car is not always the same as the seller's asking price.
The u.ae portal says the repayment period for a car loan should not exceed 60 months, five years. Emirates NBD's fixed-rate auto loan page matches this, stating a loan tenure of up to 60 months.
That is the maximum, not the default. A shorter term means a higher monthly instalment but less total interest, so run both numbers before you choose.
Your income limits the loan too: your total monthly debt repayments, including the car loan, should not exceed half of your gross monthly income (the Central Bank's 50% debt burden ratio). In the example above, someone earning AED 20,000 a month could have at most AED 10,000 of combined monthly debt repayments, and the car instalment is lower if they already carry other loans or card debt. Banks also run their own credit checks, so being under the limit does not guarantee approval.
Beyond the national limits, each bank sets its own policy. Emirates NBD's fixed-rate auto loan page, as one example, says it finances used cars up to 12 years old, and lists an age range of 18 to 65. It lists the loan for salaried and self-employed individuals in its highlights, though its eligibility box says salaried only, so confirm with the bank. Other lenders will set different limits, so compare at least two.
The practical consequence: an older, high-mileage car may be financeable at one bank and declined at another. If you are shopping for an older car, check the lender's age cut-off before you fall in love with a specific listing.
Lists vary by lender and by whether you are salaried or self-employed. Emirates NBD's page lists, for its fixed-rate auto loan:
Other banks may ask for a salary certificate or a trade licence. Ask for the checklist before you apply, and have your documents ready, since a complete application is processed faster.
You can borrow from a bank or any registered finance company in the UAE (u.ae). A dealer may offer to arrange finance for you, which is convenient because the paperwork happens in one place. The same borrowing limits apply either way, but the lender, rate and fees can differ.
Once you know your budget, you can browse dealer listings on Carzle, or look at the showrooms directory to see who stocks the type of car you are targeting.
A car loan is secured by a mortgage over the car, in favour of the lender (u.ae). That mortgage must be released before ownership can be transferred. RTA lists an electronic mortgage release as a requirement for changing a vehicle's ownership where the car has one.
To see how much a particular car is likely to be worth when you come to sell, the resale value ranking shows which models hold their value best.
