Three ways to sell a car in Dubai, how to price it, what to do if it still has a loan, and how to get paid safely before the RTA ownership transfer.
You can sell your car in Dubai three ways: to a dealer for speed, privately for the best price, or as a trade-in against your next car. Whichever you choose, clear any fines and bank loan first, agree a safe way to be paid, then complete the RTA ownership transfer so the car leaves your name.
Most sellers lose money or time in the same few places: pricing from memory, forgetting a loan on the car, or handing over the keys before the payment has cleared. This guide covers the choices in the order you will face them. It is written for Dubai-registered cars; if your car is registered in another emirate, that emirate's traffic authority sets the process.
The right route depends on what you value most: speed, price or convenience. None is best for everyone.
If you are not sure, get one dealer offer first. It gives you a floor price, and you can then decide whether a private sale is worth the extra effort. Dealers who list on Carzle are in the showrooms directory.
Start with what comparable cars are actually being offered for, not what you paid or what a friend heard. Search for the same make, model, year and trim, and look at how mileage and condition move the price.
Set your asking price slightly above the figure you would accept, and decide your lowest price before the first call. For a sense of which models hold their value best, see the resale value ranking.
In the UAE, a car loan is secured by a mortgage over the car, in favour of the bank or finance company that lent the money (u.ae). That mortgage must be released before ownership can move. RTA's ownership transfer page lists an electronic mortgage release as a requirement where the car has one.
Having everything ready before the first viewing makes buyers trust you, and avoids delays when you reach the transfer. A typical seller file includes:
The buyer will also need electronic insurance and an electronic technical inspection, which RTA lists as requirements for the transfer. Tell your buyer early so the transfer is not held up.
The transfer is only safe for you once the money is yours. Plan the payment as carefully as the sale.
Under RTA's process, the seller can start the ownership change online through the RTA website, the RTA Dubai app or the Dubai Now app, or at a Customer Happiness Centre or vehicle testing centre. After the seller enters the buyer's details, the buyer receives a link by SMS and email to sign the Sale and Purchase Agreement, and the seller then signs it.
Two timings matter. RTA says the agreement is valid for 14 days, after which it is treated as cancelled, and licensing transactions should be completed within 14 days to avoid penalties and fines. RTA also says ownership changes to the buyer's name only after the seller submits the plates, either at a centre or through delivery, so do not skip that step.
The full process, step by step, is in our guide on how to transfer car ownership in Dubai.
Keep your copy of the signed agreement and the loan clearance letter for your records once the transfer is complete.
If you are replacing the car, you can browse dealer listings on Carzle once your money has cleared.
