How to verify a UAE car dealer before you pay
Why does dealer verification matter so much in the UAE?
The UAE used-car market moves fast and most transactions complete in cash or instant bank transfer. Buyer protection mostly comes from one thing: dealing with a licensed entity that you can find again if something goes wrong. A private seller can disappear after the transfer paperwork is filed. A licensed dealer cannot, because the trade licence ties the business to a real address, real owners and a real bank.
The cost of verification is ten minutes of admin. The cost of skipping it can be the entire price of the car if the title is bad, the odometer was wound back, or the seller does not actually own the vehicle.
What is a
UAE trade licence and how do I read one?
A trade licence is the commercial authorisation that lets a business operate in a specific emirate. Every dealer in the UAE has one. The licence number is on the front of the document and is unique. It includes the legal name of the entity, the licence activities (which must include "motor vehicle trading" or similar), the issue and expiry dates, the registered address, and the names of the signatories.
For Dubai, licences are issued by the Department of Economy and Tourism. Abu Dhabi licences come from the Department of Economic Development of Abu Dhabi. Sharjah and the northern emirates each have their own equivalent authority. Free zone dealers (such as DMCC traders) are licensed by the free zone authority itself.
How do I confirm a trade licence is real?
Each emirate publishes a licence verification page where you can paste the licence number and see live details:
- Dubai DET licence search returns the entity name, status and expiry on the spot.
- Abu Dhabi DED has an equivalent online verification flow.
- Free zone licences are validated through the issuing authority's portal.
Three checks that take 60 seconds each:
- Does the licence number return a result?
- Is the licence active and not expired?
- Does the licensed activity list include vehicle trading?
If any of these checks fail, walk away.
What about Carzle Trade Licence 1616497?
Carzle Portal operates carzle.ae under UAE Trade Licence 1616497. That number is shown in the site footer and is verifiable through the issuing authority. Carzle itself never sells cars. Every transaction on the platform is between you and a verified dealer whose trade licence we verified before allowing them to list.
How do I confirm the physical showroom?
Visit it before you pay. The most common dealer-related fraud in the UAE is a fake or borrowed showroom. The premises should match the address on the trade licence. There should be inventory on the floor, staff in dealer uniforms, and a service or handover area. Take photos of the showroom signage. If a dealer asks you to meet at a different location to "see the car", treat that as a red flag.
What documents should I see before paying?
Five items, in this order:
- The vehicle Mulkiya (registration card) showing the dealer or seller as the current owner.
- The dealer's trade licence (verified separately by you).
- A signed sale agreement that includes the VIN, the agreed price, and the bank account into which the money will be paid.
- The original passport or Emirates ID copy of the signatory.
- A clear handover schedule that includes RTA inspection if the car is used.
A licensed dealer will produce all five without hesitation. Be cautious of any seller who supplies handwritten replacements or scanned PDFs without originals available for inspection.
How does Carzle verify dealers?
Every dealer applying to list on Carzle submits their trade licence, showroom address and authorised signatory. Our team cross-checks the licence number against the issuing authority, confirms the showroom physically exists, and approves the account only when both checks pass. Active dealers are re-audited on a rolling schedule. We remove any dealer whose licence lapses or whose activity falls outside the verified scope. The full policy is documented on our dealers-only marketplace explainer.
What if a dealer pressures me to skip the checks?
Decline and leave. A real dealer welcomes every check because verification protects them as much as it protects you. Pressure tactics such as "the price is only valid today" or "we have another buyer waiting" are designed to force you past the verification step. Use the verified dealer directory on Carzle to find an alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check a UAE trade licence online?
Yes. Each emirate publishes a free licence-verification page. Dubai uses the DET portal, Abu Dhabi uses the DED portal. You only need the licence number printed on the licence document.
What happens if I buy from an unlicensed seller?
You lose almost all legal recourse. UAE consumer-protection rules apply to licensed businesses. A private or unlicensed sale is treated as a transfer between individuals, with no warranty obligations and limited dispute resolution.
Do free zone dealers count as licensed?
Yes, but verify through the free zone authority that issued the licence, not the mainland economic department. The free zone trade licence is fully valid for the activity it covers.
How long does dealer verification take Carzle's team?
Typically two to five business days from licence submission to active listing approval. We will not approve a dealer until both the licence check and the physical showroom check have passed.
What is the most common UAE car dealer scam?
Misrepresented mileage and undisclosed accident history are the two most common issues. Dealing only with verified dealers materially reduces both risks because licensed entities have a reputation to protect.
